Classic Christian Poetry - John Greenleaf Whittier (1807-1892)

John Greenleaf Whittier (1807-1892)

From "Andrew Rykman's Prayer"

Pardon, Lord, the lips that dare
Shape in words a mortal's prayer!

...
Not as one who seeks his home
With a steep assured I come;
Still behind the tread I hear
Of my life-companion, Fear;
Still a shadow deep and vast
From my westering feet is cast,
Wavering, doutful, undefined,
Never shapen nor outlined:
From myself the fear has grown,
And the shadow is my own.
Yet, O Lord, through all a sense
Of Thy tneder providence
Stays my falling heart on Thee,
And confirms the feeble knee;
And, at times, my worn feet press
Spaces of cool quietness,
Lilied whiteness shone upon;
Hours there be of inmost calm,
Broken but by grateful psalm,
When I love Thee more than fear Thee,
And Thy blessed Christ seems near me,
With forgiving look, as when
He beheld the Magdalen.
Well I know that all things move
To the spheral rythm of love,-
That to Thee, O Lord of all!

Classic Christian Poetry - John Donne (15-72-1631)

John Donne (1572-1631)

Batter my heart, three-person'd God

Batter my heart, three-person'd God, for you
As yet but knock, breathe, shine, and seek to mend;
That I may rise and stand, o'erthrow me, and bend
Your force to break, blow, burn, and make me new.
I, like an usurp'd town to'another due,
Labor to'admit you, but oh, to no end;
Reason, your viceroy in me, me should defend,
But is captiv'd, and proves weak or untrue.
Yet dearly'I love you, and would be lov'd fain,
But am betroth'd unto your enemy;
Divorce me,'untie or break that knot again,
Take me to you, imprison me, for I,
Except you'enthrall me, never shall be free,
Nor ever chaste, except you ravish me.

Christian Poetry - A Poem about being crucified with Christ

”Is not my word like as a fire? saith the LORD; and like a hammer that breaketh
the rock in pieces?” ~Jeremiah 23:29

“I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ
liveth in me…” ~Galatians 2:20

“Crucified with Christ”

When I find myself caught in battle
Where the soldiers of Satan roam
When I feel that I cannot face him
Oh, Lord, I just want to go home

How I long for my place in Heaven
And the Savior that there awaits
Far from worries and fears that hound me
Sitting safely beyond those gates
How I wish this was all behind me
That my journey had reached its end
But at night as I lay in silence
I see the face of a trusted friend

I can picture the nails that pierced him
One by one through each gentle hand
Hands that reach through the night to find me
Hands that lift me and help me stand

Just a touch and my eyes are opened
No longer fearing the dreaded fight
Though just a drop of his blood has spoken
A thousand words echoed through the night

In the haven of true surrender
Before a Savior who understands
I cry, “Dear Lord, as those nails were driven,
Drive me into your waiting hands!”

And having done so, I ask dear Savior,
That my healing may be complete,
Let this life that I now surrender
Be nailed secure to your wounded feet

Only there would my soul be strengthened
That from your will I would not depart
And like the spear through your side was driven,
I’d find my way to your bleeding heart

Christian Poetry - A Poem about our real Home, Heaven

"Upon the Everlasting Hills”

I lived, a beggar, lost and blind.
Wondering over hill and dale,
In search of love to call my own,
I roamed the land to no avail.

Carrying nothing but my need,
An empty soul, a heart of pain.
I sought a place to call my home
But lost and blind, I sought in vain.

For though I travel far and wide
To find it on this earthly ground,
Until I stand with Christ the king,
My rightful home shall not be found.

Oh, for a peace that never ends!
Where mortal souls are finally free,
Where neighbors praise the living God,
Where Jesus sits and dines with me!

A home where pain does not exist,
A home whose builder is the Lord,
Where every man shall see his face
Where life and love are their reward.

Where I can reach and touch his hand.
Where He is mine and I am His,
Upon the everlasting hills,
Forevermore to live in bliss.

Oh, heart of mine, we’ll soon be home!
For he who promised shall fulfill,
And we’ll reside on holy ground
And be forever in his will.

Christian Poetry - A Poem about Going Home to be with Jesus

“Homecoming”

Ever feel like you dont belong, like something is missing? Ever feel a certain longing but you cant really put your finger on it? That is a natural longing that we have to be with God, in his presence, surrounded by the faithful, the redeemed. Hang in there, we will be home soon.

When my days have reached their number
When my soul has been releasedAnd on wings of Angels carried
To the land of perfect peace

When my heart no longer weary
And my garment stained no more
By the things that lay behind me
Feel the joys that lay before

When this body, old and tired
Sheds the passing of the years
As it welcomes with elation
Every change that now appears

When my eyes are met with wonders
Much too glorious to proclaim
While my mind repeats with passion
Nothing but a single name

……………………………Jesus

Then my heart will melt within me
As it comes to comprehend
That I am home and any moment
I will see my God, my Friend

How the thought of that encounter
Sends my spirit to its knees
Wipes away the tears and sorrow
As it puts my soul at ease
In an instant every longing
Every wish I’ve entertained
Will quickly burn before the luster
Of this life, which I have gained

I’ll abandon every notion of
This world and all its charms
As the God of all creation
Comes to hold me in His arms!

Christian Poetry - A Poem about Jesus, our friend

What is a true friend? A true friend is one that looks out for the welfare and happiness of another without regard for what it will cost him. Someone who will protect you even from yourself. Someone who understands your fears, your pain and your longing better than anyone else. That is what Jesus is. We just have to recognize it and accept it.

“Faithful Friend”

From where I stood in darkness,
my eyes could scarcely see
but then it was that I took note
of someone watching me.

Can’t say how long He’d been there.
Perhaps I failed to see.
Yet in my heart I knew
He’d always been there, patiently.

And when at last I saw Him,
He took me by the hand.
My instant love and need for Him
I couldn’t understand.

Together we went walking
and gently as we went
His words brought strength to carry on;
the night had far been spent.

Though never did he wrong me,
quite often without care
I’d not respond nor speak to Him
as though He wasn’t there.

He led me through the darkness
when the road became a maze
And when my strength would fail me,
He carried me for days.

I never understood
why He never walked away
And though I always failed Him,
He always chose to stay.

Perhaps it was His knowledge
of the things I could not see
The life of rest and glory
that He had prepared for me.

He’s been a great companion,
an ever-faithful friend
He’s kept His words and promises
until the very end.

By Him I’ve fought the battle,
By Him I’ve run the race
And now I rest in glory,
indebted solely to His grace.

Christian Poetry - A poem about LAURA

       “LAURA”

Long ago and far away
     On top of Golgotha hill
A man cried out “my God, my God”
As Heaven and Earth stood still

All of the pain I have ever felt
And all that I’ll ever feel
Broke through the boundaries of space and time
Like breaking a wall of steel

Under the moonlight, unknown to me
They were laid on that innocent man
Who never refused for he knew it all
Was part of a wonderful plan

Riddled with many a bleeding wound
     But thinking on Heaven’s bliss
He took all the sins that I’ve ever known
     And quietly made them his

Amazingly then, after tasting death,
      He triumphed in Victory
And after he opened up Heaven’s gates
He turned and he called for me…
